ABC's of Skin Care

Skin care products and treatment options are a dime a dozen and sifting through them can be a daunting task. Here is some information to help you understand how your skin works and what it needs on a daily basis to keep it healthy, moist, and supple.

Your skin functions as a protective barrier against wind, sun, pollution, smoke and other environmental factors. Made up of millions of cells, thousands of them die off every day, fall off, and are replaced by new cells from below. Unfortunately as we age, this process slows down, creating a haphazard stacking of these dead and damaged cells. This creates dark blotches, sun damage and a dull, lifeless complexion. Exposing the new fresh layer of skin with a more even color and smoother texture is the goal. Depending on the extent of damage, the route to achieve this goal will vary.

There are four basic elements to incorporate into your daily skin care regimen: Cleansing, Moisturizing, Exfoliating and Protection.

Good clean skin allows oxygen and skin care products to better penetrate the surface, keeping your skin blemish free.

Moisturizing is essential no matter your skin type. Many people think oily skin just becomes oilier by applying moisturizer. However, a formula specific to oily skin keeps it in balance, so that it stays hydrated without producing excess oil.

Exfoliation is essential in helping the skin shed those dulling layers of dead skin. This can be accomplished with nightly use of retinols or Glycolic acids.

And finally, we absolutely must protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun. A 30 spf sunblock with zinc oxide gives you the best protection against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Topical antioxidants give your sun block a boost and aid in correcting damaged skin. Skinceuticals C+E and ferulic acid is a wonderful product to incorporate into your daily routine. It was chosen as the best anti-aging choice 2005 by the editors of Allure magazine. It has amazing free radical-fighting powers and is easily absorbed.
